Family: I have been married to Donald S. Brian for 32 years. We have two daughters and six grandchildren.Education: I have an associate’s degree in surgical technology from Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe.Getting Started: In 1997, I retired as an orthopedic surgery technician. I had always had a dream of owning my own wedding planner business, so in 1998, I started Love in Bloom.On the ABC: I was hesitant to join the organization since my business was successful and growing. However, this was one of my best business decisions, as it gave me colleagues to learn from and grow with. It also provided many Sandals trips to visit the properties where my wedding couples would honeymoon. In addition, there were many great vendor contacts.Business Goals: I would like to continue my current workload for three to five years. At some point, I would like to assist novices who are starting their businesses.
On evaluating success: The success of a business is judged by its long-term profitability. And in the wedding planning world, it is ultimately dependent upon client happiness. If the client is happy and the business is profitable, I am successful.One business mistake: The biggest mistake was adding a “month-of“ service option. Many clients were unable to complete their part of the contract and would then dump that work on me weeks or days before the wedding day. In essence, they would receive almost full service at “month-of” prices. My schedule could get very complicated in the weeks leading up to the ceremony. I no longer offer this package.Memberships: Association of Bridal Consultants, Association of Wedding Professionals International, Shreveport Chamber of Commerce, and Shreveport/Bossier Business Association.Mentors: I was able to watch my paternal grandparents build and manage a successful dry goods business in Marksville, La. In New Orleans, my maternal grandfather operated Butler and Chandler shoe stores on Canal Street. But my best mentor was my father, a regional representative for Chevron Oil Company. His lessons regarding open and honest communication with the client were invaluable.Industry Influencers: I have been blessed to have met David Tutera, Preston Bailey, Colin Cowie, Sylvia Weinstock, and of course, Donnie Brown. I always enjoy visiting with Donnie while attending the Dallas Market Center. In addition, my ABC colleagues who have offered their valuable time and priceless advice.Inspiration: I seek inspiration attending markets, reading wedding publications, and online. Industries that inspire me the most are new textiles, lighting, and wedding furnishings.Marketing strategy: I participate in many local bridal fairs. My business has been recognized in The Knot, Weddings with Style, Style Me Pretty, Weddingwire, and more. Much of my business stems from word-of-mouth, clients, and vendors.On staying fresh: I refresh my company by attending conferences and gift markets in Dallas, Las Vegas, and New York City.Ideal Client: My ideal client is a happy person who presents with a clear, concise vision of her day. She is prompt with appointments and accepting of my recommendations. She doesn’t allow family members or friends to change the plans once finalized. However, if changes are necessary, she can easily work with me to amend things.
Favorite business book: The $100.00 Start Up by Chris Guillebeau. He writes about how to grow your hobby into a successful business without investing a lot of money.Reading now: Orphan Train by Christina Kline. More than 100 years ago, my paternal grandparents were orphans who were transplanted from the New York Foundling Orphanage in New York City to South Louisiana. As infants, they rode the orphan train. Both were adopted by Louisiana families, grew up, met, and married. They lived happily until my grandfather died in 1982.Favorite movie: My favorite movie is Out of Africa. It is a beautiful love story about a strong woman who can survive all obstacles. The panoramic shots of Africa and the music were both incredible.Free time: What free time? When possible I love spending time with family and friends. We love to waterski and snow ski, travel, and go to musicals.Words of wisdom: Join a group like the ABC. Seek out a special colleague to be your mentor. In time, you will become a mentor for others. Do not fear mistakes, as this is how you will learn your best lessons. Always continue your education. You are never too old to learn.Giving back: I have served on the Master Panel for several years, been Louisiana state coordinator for eight years, been an industrial speaker, and help novices begin their businesses. I give back by volunteering.Little known fact: For 10 years, I was the team captain for a Jamaica Medical Missionary Team for First United Methodist Church in Shreveport. In 1992, I received my PADI scuba certification and have enjoyed many dives throughout the years. <
