My husband and I met online. It was my third day of online dating, so I got lucky to meet him so quickly. Planning my own wedding definitely impacted my choices and was a unique challenge. I wanted the event to be timeless, elegant, and to feel lavish.INSPIRATION: Timeless elegance“AHA” MOMENT: Deciding the floral elements should be lush and incorporate fruit, as well as have lots of candles present, really was the turning point and gave the wedding that extravagant feel.MOST UNIQUE DESIGN ELEMENT: The red grapes in our floral centerpieces not only added a deep jewel tone to our floral, but it added a lavish, decadent appeal.COLOR PALETTE: Ivory, gold, jewel-tone floralBUDGET: $30,000STAFF HOURS: 150PLANNING TIME: 6 monthsCLIENT MEETINGS: Too many to countSET UP/STRIKE DETAILS: There were only two hours of set up time involved in this event.REVENUE BREAKDOWN: 10% planning, 25% floral, 25% catering, 5% stationery, 5%rentals, 15% photography, 10% videography, 5% detailsBIGGEST CHALLENGE: I turned details of planning over to Beth McHugh, who works for my company, about two weeks before the wedding. Relinquishing control to another planner on the day of the event was one of the biggest challenges. Plus, it poured rain almost all day on the wedding. Since Mackinaw Island does not allow cars, transportation was tricky. We brought everyone by ferry to the island. On the wedding day, we had horse-drawn carriages transport guests to and from the ceremony.LEARNINGS: It is in the details where the wedding design is perfected. I love flowers, nice paper products, and good linens. These things can change a wedding. Paper products are the first touches your guests get of your wedding, so it’s important that they be on brand with the rest of your wedding design. I love lush floral, so I wanted ample flowers. Linens can change a room, accompanied by the right chair. I brought in specialty linens and chiavari chairs to make the room look perfect. WPM
